Oils

My work grows out of a lifelong engagement with landscape, architecture, and the act of seeing. After a long career as an architectural illustrator, I now devote my time primarily to painting in oils, focusing on landscapes and seascapes of the American West—from the mountains and open country of Montana to the forests, waters, and coastal landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

From my years as an illustrator and designer I learned to translate what I saw into images that could communicate not only physical space, but also a sense of atmosphere and place. Painting has given me a more personal and intuitive way to continue that exploration.

I am particularly drawn to landscapes that convey a strong sense of place—changing light across a mountain range, the quiet geometry of a shoreline, reflections on water, or the layered forms of trees and distant hills. Working in oils allows me to explore these subjects through color, texture, and the movement of the brush, while remaining attentive to the underlying structure that first attracted me to them.

Now living on Bainbridge Island, I find myself surrounded by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The water, islands, forests, and shifting skies provide an endless source of subjects, while my connection to Montana continues to inform my sense of space, scale, and light.

For me, painting is ultimately an opportunity to slow down and work freely to imagine the landscape in new and interesting ways.
