Watercolor and pencil
With my creative works, I strive to share moments of wonder and the beauty of nature: those simple experiences that enrich our lives. I am most inspired by the challenge of portraying the varied temperaments of animals. The eyes of an animal inspire my inherent determination to convey that spark that lies within. Each watercolor piece begins with wet-in-wet technique: allowing dilute pigments to spread and merge upon the liquid sheen atop the paper, to chart the course of the composition and capture the essence. Refinements are then judiciously layered on top using either wet-in-wet or wet-on-dry techniques. Each work settles into a unique equilibrium between ethereal fluidity and crisp definition. Balancing the known with the unknown.
I began working on black paper in 2024, and consequently added white gouache to my palette. As I see it, the dark paper sets a stage of mystery upon which the play of light within the piece can best be drawn forth.
