The Artists
Dana Harris Seeger
Encaustic & mixed media
I am an encaustic and mixed media artist. My work in painting and printmaking captures the ephemeral nature of time and memory. As an identical twin and the mother of twins, I am constantly balancing, receding and emerging. As a Baltic American, my family ancestry is ever present in my life and the lives of my children. In my encaustic painting and mixed media monotype prints I use symbols from my heritage as well as my own vocabulary of images to connect with the past and relate to those in the present.
My work is heavily layered with fragmented images of windmills, fans and typewriters being revealed and obscured by decorative transparent papers, ephemera from my family and artifacts of my life. I tell my personal story in every piece, but attempt to relate it to the greater cycle of human existence- connecting with others as we travel through the journey of life. I find anchors in the symbols I’ve chosen, and keep repeating them over and over in a kind of melody that combines the decorative patterns of femininity and the fleeting nature of time.
