Artist’s Statement:

“Hiking to breathtaking places inspires me to paint en plein air.

With light that’s fleeting, the observations are quick and the study fresh with little detail. The hard part comes when recreating that landscape in a larger format and hoping to recapture the freshness and rhythm I initially found.

The joy stick, my palette knife, helps bring out bold contrasts in foliage, rich moods of mountains and the sharp angles of waves. I melt into a zone where movement flows and I think of nothing else. The landscape evolves into a loose, somewhat abstracted, representational painterly style.

My goal is to inspire viewers to meander through the painting chasing the expressive light.”

Artist’s Bio:

Fatima Young received creative degrees at the F.I.T. and also C.W. Post University in New York. This is her 4th year serving on the board of Plein Air Washington Artists. She was one of the early advocates serving on the steering committee for the new Drawing & Painting Studio at BARN on Bainbridge Island.

Her work has been shown in these NW venues: Cole Gallery, Karla Matzke Gallery, Scott Milo Gallery, and American Art Company as well as Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.
