Three Bainbridge High School visual art students were awarded cash prizes, by the Bainbridge Island Studio Tour as part of their annual Youth Art Award. The award is open to Bainbridge students and residents who are High School juniors and seniors as of March. This was the fifth year for the award, which is funded by last year's Studio Tour artists who (optionally) donate a portion of their sales. Dinah Satterwhite is the Tour Manager, and is grateful to the artists who are so generous and willing to give back to our young art community.

The Grand Prize went to Adda Amelang, a Senior, for her stunning pen and pencil artwork. She received a special award certificate and check for $300. Two Honorable Mentions were also awarded, with $100 checks each. One went to Brent Dyer, a Junior, for his detailed pen and pencil work. The other was awarded to Chloe Halbert, a Senior, for her digital artwork. Each student who entered was required to submit five photos of their work, and complete an application form and detailed artist's statement.

There were three judges, each a seasoned artist in the area and long-time Studio Tour participant. Ms. Satterwhite was one of the judges this year, and commented that "there were so many wonderful entries that it was hard to select just three winners. But these three young people had an extraordinary talent that took all of us to another level. We all agreed on the winners without much discussion, which is rare. I personally felt that the depth and quality in some pieces was at the university level, and they really spoke to me. There was so much emotion. Many of the wonderful entries that we couldn't choose as winners were terrific, too. The artists had so much to say, and it came through in their work!""

The awards were announced on May 10th, at the Bainbridge High School Spring Art Festival, and the Studio Tour plans to continue with the award in the future. For more information, contact Ms. Satterwhite at 206-842-0504.
