Art has always been part of my life. Growing up on Bainbridge Island, my brother and I hot glued scrap wood together in my dad's shop. We were always encouraged to think creatively and use our hands. In this way, art was a defining part of my education, enabling me to see the world in vivid color, varying textures and layered shapes. And, I realized that I wanted to use art, in some form, in my daily life. This led me toward a degree in teaching art. I sought to help kids feel empowered through creativity. And, kids love clay. So really, teaching led me to ceramics. With clay, I felt instantly connected. I immediately loved the feeling of cold, damp clay.
Most of all, I love that I can create functional art - being able to eat toast off bright plates I have made somehow makes the toast tastes better. I love rolling out big slabs of clay and forming them on molds to make plates, platters and bowls. I love glazing with bright colors and then carving back through the glaze to the natural color of the clay to create whimsical, playful images. And mostly, I love the idea of groups of people coming together to eat a meal, food piled on my dishes, hiding the images like surprises before dessert.
