Before making quilts, my involvement in the arts had always been through the medium of sculpture.Like most people, I had always thought of quilts as a source of comfort, a reminder of "home" and times past. When my father passed away seven years ago, I collected his shirts, took them apart, and made quilts for my mother and siblings. For me, I realized the true comfort of quilts was in the making of them.
Never having been much of a fan of planning ahead, I take inspiration from artists whose work seems more spontaneous - the paintings of Helen Frankenthaler, the sculpture of Tom Friedman, the writings of Lynda Barry. They create art that is beautiful, unexpected and joyous and I try to infuse my quilts with the same.
