Capturing images on photos is just the beginning of Dinah Satterwhite's art process. Adding a new dimension to standard photography, Ms. Satterwhite specializes in handcoloring.

Handcoloring black and white photographs with special oils results in a luminous and often dream-like image. The transparent quality of the oils gives the photo a certain mystery as it highlights features that were captured by the film without obscuring the details of the original photo. Ms. Satterwhite often works with infrared film, which reflects infrared light from various natural sources and adds to the dreamy nature of the handcoloring process. She sometimes tints a single image on the photograph, leaving the remainder black and white for a striking surrealistic effect.

Inspired by the myriad of colors found in nature, Ms. Satterwhite often chooses her subjects in the Pacific Northwest. Her work also reflects her travels around the world and in the U.S. Originals and limited series prints are available, along with note cards.
